Empowering Healthcare Practitioners Project
Ensuring a well-prepared and diverse educator workforce is crucial for enhancing patient care and advancing human rights through equitable access to high-quality healthcare services. Through its collaboration with Buckinghamshire Health and Social Care Academy (BHSCA), NHS England South East and University of Surrey, the RJ4All International Institute supports the empowerment of healthcare practitioners to pursue educator roles across diverse settings. This aligns with our commitment to addressing health inequalities in society, with the ultimate goal of reducing disparities in health outcomes.
About The Project
Project Background
There is evidence that nurses, midwives and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) lack the support and guidance necessary to become practice educators or educators within their profession. Many of these healthcare professionals struggle with confidence to apply for educator roles and lack awareness regarding the career trajectory and available roles. Without an increase in educators, goals to increase the number of learners in universities and those in the workforce will not be met. Therefore, there is a need for support outside the traditional training and education to recruit and retain educators.
To respond to this need, a Project Board from BHSCA, NHS England South East and the University of Surrey was created to run the Aspirant Educator Masterclasses project to guide healthcare practitioners towards educator roles and give them insight into the range of roles and required preparation.
Hypothesis
By exposing healthcare practitioners to the Aspirant Educator Masterclasses project outputs, they will have an increased understanding of the educator role and the range of roles available for healthcare professionals, be more prepared and willing to apply for the educator role, and be more prepared and empowered to flourish and be retained in an educator role.
Geographical Scope
This research is conducted within the geographical confines of Southeast England.
Project Objectives
The overarching objective of this project is to increase the number of educators in the healthcare field. The project will measure the effectiveness of the project interventions which include:
- 4 masterclasses
- 1 webinar (1 hour long)
- 1 podcast series
This project will evaluate whether these interventions will:
- Enable healthcare practitioners to develop insight into educator roles.
- Enable healthcare practitioners to access educator roles in a range of settings.
- Increase likeliness of healthcare practitioners to be prepared for and apply for educator roles.
Domains of Change
This project will measure whether there is an increase in healthcare professionals’ understanding of the educator role and the range of roles available for them, an increase in preparedness to apply for the educator role, an increase in willingness to apply for the educator role, an increase in preparedness to flourish in the educator role, and an increased likelihood of retention within healthcare in an education role.
